Write Mongolian at Personal Computers

1. Introduction

At first:excuse me, because my English is not so good. But I think , that’s why my words are more easy.The most of programs I am using are in German language. You must have a little pinch of fantasy. Thank you !

Since a few years I am interested in writing the Mongolian language with cyrillic letters. One year ago I have found a program with which I can remap the buttons of a German keyboard to a Mongolian keyboard layout by using a Mongolian font. This program was created by Peter Szászvári (http://iap.ethz.ch/users/szp). You can get the needed font from the Mongolian web site http://www.mol.mn. You can download the full description as Word 6.0, Word 97 or RTF dcuments fron the download area.

2. Requirements

2.1 Operating Systems

You ca use the following explaint program with Windows 3.1x, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. The  program MGLKEY16.EXE is to be used with Windows 3.1x to Windows 95. MGLKEY32.EXE is created for use with Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 1.The above listed install files include the Mongolian Font.

2.2 What else is needed ?

Of course you need one of the above listed programs – MGLKEY16.EXE or MGLKEY32.EXE. MGLKEY16.EXE includes WXKBD21 (http://iap.ethz.ch/users/szp/keys/keys21.html ) which is Freeware. But please read the Help File of this program.
MGLKEY16.EXE bases on Keys+ (32 Bit) (http://iap.ethz.ch/users/szp/keys/keys41.html) which is Shareware. The author of the program needs a little fee to continue his project.

You can download the Mongolian font from ftp://mol.mn/pub/monfonts.zip, but it is still not necessary.

3. Installation

The installation of this Keyboard remappers are very easy. You only must start the requested program for your operating system. But think about that the 16 Bit version is free and the 32 Bit version includes a shareware component. Now the keyboard remappers are ready for use.

4. Working with the Keyboard Remappers

Here I want to give you some suggestions for using the keyboard remapper to write with Mongolian letters. In all applications where you can select a font you can type in Mongolian letters., such as Word, WordPad, Write, E-Mail, Fax Clients and IRC.

Start one of the keyboard remappers and change with the hot key "CTRL" + "+" to the Mongolian keyboard layout, select one of the Mongolian fonts and you are able to type in Mongolian letters not only in Word or WordPad. In all applications where you can select a font. "CTRL" + "-" changes back to your own language. Only if you want to do some actions in the menu bar, change back to your keyboard layout (english).

Because it is possible to send Faxes and E-Mail from the above listed applications you are able to send them in Mongolian.

In other programs, f.i. Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, you can create user defined scripts with a Mongolian font. So you can correct view an Mongolian Web Site.

To chat is very popular in the Internet. I have try to use Mongolian fonts with Microsoft Chat and Visual IRC 97. It works fine. How you can configure these and the other in this document listed programs to use them with the keyboard remapper and Mongolian font you can full read in the documents from the download area.
